Banyan Community Center is a meeting space for more than 200 children and their families and provides tutoring and life skills to youth who are challenged by high rates of poverty, crime and unemployment. The program has a 100 percent high school graduation and college acceptance rate for its students. With a strong demand and long waiting list, a larger space was a must. Banyan Community Center was founded in 1990 by Tim and Joani Essenburg when they moved into the Phillips neighborhood.

Steen designed the mechanical, electrical and plumbing for the new space which included a preschool space, gymnasium, community rooms, youth development rooms, study rooms, art studio, commercial kitchen, dining space, laundry, and computer lab.
